Chapter Eleven

Friday, April 15th.

Lakeview Trailer Park. Mississippi.

At first light Rob was up making coffee and anxious to take the boat out on the river. He mumbled to himself, “I’ve got no bait. Damn it. Nothing will be open this early.”

He filled a mug with coffee and took the dogs out the back door to the patio behind the trailer. Every trailer had one and it came with a cheap umbrella table and four plastic chairs.

Smoking, relaxing and resting his tired body, Rob soaked up the cool morning dampness of Mississippi he had become accustomed to. He glanced towards the river and said, “I hope that dumbass Tim didn’t wreck my fuckin boat.”

Too dark to see if the boat was tied to the dock, Rob lit up another smoke and leaned back in his chair. Out of the blackness, the dogs came back from their run and flopped down on the patio slabs next to his chair.

“Where did you guys go?”

The sky broke open a few minutes later and he was thinking about limping into the trailer for more coffee when Tim wandered over from next door.

“Didn’t hear y’all come in.”

“Two thirty. We were beat.”

“Long drive from Cincinnati?”

“Too fuckin long. Got any bait?”

“Some. You going out soon?”

“Want to, but it’s too early for the bait shop and I’ve got nothing left.”

“Take what I’ve got from yesterday,” said Tim.

“What were you catching?”

“A few bass. Two nice trout. I had to look up how to clean them and fillet them the right way. I’m not a cook and Lareen is gone.”

“I was hoping you didn’t take that bitch back while I was away.”

“Scared to.” Tim laughed. “You’d beat my ass.”

“Damned right I would. She was like a fuckin Harley chain hanging around your neck. You’ve got a chance at a life now.”

“Yeah, I do.” He glanced down at Waylon. “You get another dog?”

“Gideon got him. He’s a biter. Took a fuckin chunk out of my leg before he got used to me.”

“Jeeze, you keeping him?”

“Yep. He knows us now. His name is Waylon. He’ll be okay. Have to teach him how to fish and sit still in the boat. That’s the part that takes time.”

“The park went up for sale while you were gone.”

“No shit?”

“None.” Tim laughed. “You interested in buying it?”

“Might be. That’s a decent house on the edge of the water that belongs to the owner. Nice dock and deck and all the rest of it.”

“Make an offer,” said Tim, sarcasm in his voice.

“How much are they asking?”

“More than we can afford. This is a huge chunk of waterfront land. It’s worth a lot.”

“Yeah, it is. Lots of privacy.”

“I’ve got to get ready for work.” Tim got to his feet. “Glad to see you back, Dakota.”

“Yeah, I’m glad to be back.”

“I’ll bring the bait over and put it on the table for you.”

“Thanks,” said Rob.

With a lot to think about, Rob went into the trailer for more coffee and Gideon was in the kitchen filling a mug.

“Tim says the park is for sale.
